Enjoy talks by local geologist Haydon Bailey and archaeologist Wendy Morrison as you take the train journey through the Chiltern chalk hills, learning about the formation of chalk and how it has been used now and in the past, along with other chalk activities to get involved in!

Chalk activities planned so far…

  • Talks on the trains from local geologist Haydon Bailey and archaeologist Wendy Morrison
  • Fossil, mineral and stone handling, fact cards and fun chalk sheet from Rockwatch
  • Interesting geological specimens, geological games as well as something more challenging for adults from Geological Association
  • Children’s chalk activity trail
  • Children only travel for £1!

Plan for the day

Train talks: departing from Chinnor station at 12:15pm and 2pm, geologist Haydon Bailey will talk about how chalk was formed in the Chilterns millions of years ago. Enjoy a 15 min break at Princes Risborough and then board the train again to hear from Wendy Morrison about how chalk has been used through time by different civilisations living in and around the Chilterns! The talk is suitable for all ages.

Information stands: the chalky stalls will be at the station all day, with chalk activities and information for all the family!

For tickets, please buy a ticket from the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway on 11th April. This will give you access to all trains and station for the whole day.

The Railway is situated in Kiln Avenue, Chinnor, which is just off the B4009. The car-park is owned by the Railway and is FREE for train ticket holders. Please set your SatNav to OX39 4BZ – you will see the car park on the right hand side as you proceed along Kiln Avenue. We are easy to reach by car as Junction 6 on the M40 is just 3 miles away and Princes Risborough is 4 miles further along the B4009. Once you arrive in Chinnor village please follow the brown tourism signs displaying the steam locomotive to reach the Railway.

About Chilterns Chalk

The landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Chiltern Hills has been shaped by its underlying chalk bedrock – formed millions of years ago, but still having an impact today. Our Chilterns Chalk Festival celebrates this connection to our landscape, both ancient and modern. Find out more.

The Chinnor and Princes Risborough railway

Running along the foot of the Chilterns chalk escarpment, The Chinnor and Princes Risborough railway opened in 1872. Part of the former Great Western Railway branch, after the Second World War, the line closed to passenger traffic in 1957, due to the lack of use. The line was then only used for cement service until 1989. The railway as we know it now reopened for passenger service in July 1994.
