Hidden Hands: women and work in the Chilterns

Hidden Hands: women and work in the Chilterns

‘Hidden Hands: Women and work in the Chilterns’ exhibition

This six-month-long exhibition ran from 7th March – 10th September 2023. It was curated by the Woodlanders’ Lives and Landscapes project team in partnership with Wycombe Museum and Buckinghamshire New University, and formed the museum’s Summer Exhibition.

Historically, women’s paid work has often been belittled and forgotten. The exhibition hunted down the hidden work of women in the Chilterns’ villages that formed a crucial part of the local economy during the 19th and 20th centuries. Luxury goods made by these highly skilled workers contrast with the harsh reality of working long and poorly paid hours from their homes.

The exhibition showcased stories of straw plaiting in Buckland; caning and rushing chair seats in West Wycombe; lacemaking in Great Hampden; and braiding and beading in Holmer Green. A series of events including craft sessions, family days, workshops, a Bodgers’ Pub Tour and a ‘memory day’ all took place alongside the exhibition.

Visitors enjoyed the exhibition and the stories it uncovered:

  • “All credit to those women who worked so hard In and around High Wycombe. They were highly skilled but paid peanuts. Love the exhibition that remembers them.”
  • “Fascinating insight into the industries of High Wycombe.”
  • “Beautiful collection. Hidden Hands is wonderful.”
  • “Congratulations on an amazing, interesting exhibition”
