  • Theme: Walkin’ and talkin’ floodplain meadows: sites of beauty, biodiversity and nostalgic stories.
  • Date: Sunday 26 May 2024.
  • Time: Prompt 10am start. Expected end time 12.30pm.
  • Place: Meadows Farm, approx. 2.5 km casual walk with discussion breaks.
  • Walk leaders: This walk has been planned between Dadima’s CIC (Geeta) with Professor Richard Holliman, Professor David Gowing, Emma Rothero, Dr Vicky Bowskill (Vicky is a core member of Dadima’s walks).

Walking route information: A grasslands walk around some fields on Meadow Farm. The whole walk is basically flat, but the surface has ridges and furrows (humps and hollows), and the vegetation will be up to 50cm high. If there has been rain overnight, or if it’s forecast on the day, the vegetation will be wet. If this is the case wellies and waterproof trousers will be a good idea.

The path may be muddy after heavy rain and not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs (if you have a baby carrier, please come along and everyone is always super helpful). The walk is suitable for children who can walk around 2.5 km at a moderate pace with some breaks, and the meadows contain plenty of exciting opportunities for developing children’s curiosity and exploration skills.

We will be walking through a series of floodplain meadows, which should be in full bloom. It should be beautiful sight, but please ensure that you have sufficient medication if you live with hay fever.

Floodplain meadows have been highly valued in the UK landscape for more than a thousand years. They characteristically comprise a wide range of plant species, which in turn support a high diversity of other species (including birds and insects). Meadows provide ecosystem services, such as biodiversity conservation, nutrient management, carbon storage, human wellbeing and recreation, and flood risk mitigation. David Gowing, Emma Rothero and Vicky Bowskill from the Open University will offer perspectives on the values of meadows as we walk through the different fields.

Additional information

Car park meeting point: Meadow Farm car park, Thame Road, Blackthorn, nr Bicester, OX25 1TW (free). For directions, view here.

Please bring: suitable shoes and clothing for the weather (we will not cancel for rain and will try to bring some spare waterproofs if anyone needs to borrow – just let us know in advance please). Shoes should be sturdy with good grip, or wellies if it’s looking wet. (Trainers are not advised on this walk, as even on warm dry day, the base of the vegetation will remain damp from the overnight dew and walking through it may soak your feet – see how you feel). Please also bring drinks and maybe some snacks for a stopping point if you wish to, and let us know if you have any allergies/specific dietary requirements – Dadima’s leaders always bring some vegetarian snacks and masala Indian chai to share with the group.

Facilities: there are toilets on site, and we can use a covered area for shelter if needed.

Dogs: assistance dogs only on this walk please; no other dogs allowed.

Suggested post-walk refreshment (optional): The Bull & Butcher, The Green, Ludgershall, Bucks, HP18 9NZ. Do call ahead to book a table if interested in having lunch.

If you have any questions about our monthly walks, please visit Dadima’s Walks FAQs | Chilterns AONB or email Geeta. You can usually just turn up to a walk — we do not turn people away. At times, we may stress that booking is essential, and we encourage you to email or DM Geeta on social media via the links below. Booking always helps us to plan ahead. Please email Geeta if keen on attending this trip. If you wish to join the Dadima’s WhatsApp update group, please let Geeta know to add you.
