Arbury Banks
Arbury Banks lies on the Hertfordshire chalk scape and was probably built during the Late Bronze Age.
Crop marks suggest the site contained houses and pits for grain storage, although these may date to a later period, since Middle Iron Age pottery has been found.
The hillfort is sited along a likely prehistoric trackway, and in a landscape that becomes more heavily settled in the Roman period. It is possible that some of the activity within the hillfort actually date to this later phase of use. In the vicinity there are Roman villas, a temple and agricultural field systems.
There is some suggestion that the Battle of Watling Street may have occurred at or near Arbury Banks, where Boudicca and her army were ultimately defeated by the Romans.
