Cowleaze Wood
Cowleaze Wood is set high in the Chiltern Hills with amazing views over the surrounding countryside. There is a great mix of habitats in this small wood and plenty of paths to explore. The bluebells in late April and May are like a blue carpet and well worth a visit.
Tragically, on the 31st March 1944 an Halifax bomber LW 579 crashed in the wood. All seven of the crew died and are remembered in a memorial at the site. The crew were returning from a bombing raid in Nuremburg along with 1000 other planes. The night was unexpectedly clear allowing German fighter planes with anti-aircraft guns to attack.
