While some drovers’ routes covered very long distances, every town and village had tracks along which animals were driven to reach common land. Medieval and Tudor Amersham shared with six other parishes, unrestricted rights to use the large expanse of Wycombe Heath. Drawing on recent research into Amersham’s history, we will explain the importance of common land and drovers to the local economy.
Our walk starts outside Amersham Museum and will take the drovers’ track towards Wycombe Heath. It will pick up another drovers’ track leading from Wycombe Heath into Little Missenden. From there we will follow the route of the original Aylesbury to London road, through the park designed by Humphrey Repton and past the imposing Robert Adam portico of Shardeloes, returning to Amersham.

There are kissing gates and some rough and muddy paths.
