Bacombe Hill Local Nature Reserve

A valuable area of downland, scrub and woodland on the central Chilterns’ escarpment. It has a mix of mature beech woodland, paricularly to the top and the south of the reserve, also with large aras of open chalk grassland. It is managed as a Local Nature Reserve and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (for its chalk grassland). There are some rare chalk grassland flowers and butterflies. It is noted for orchids.

Numerous footpaths cross the site, including the Ridgeway National Trail.

Flowers to look out for: Thyme, Clustered Bellflower, Hoary Plantain, Pyramidal Orchid, Juniper, Bee Orchid, Fragrant Orchid

Butterflies to look out for: Chalkhill Blue, Brown Argus, Dark Green Fritillary, Duke of Burgundy

Walks and rides (on bridleway).

Nearest station Wendover (15 minutes’ walk). There is parking in Wendover.

PLEASE BE AWARE: there used to be an area off the Ellesborough Road out of Wendover (near the sharp right bend) where cars used to park to access Bacombe Hill. However parking is no longer allowed here and parking tickets have recently been issued. Please park in Wendover and access Bacombe Hill from there (a few minutes walk away).
