With everyone having different likes and ideas, it can be hard to find a suitable day out for all the family. Yet, the Chilterns has so much to offer. There are gardens and playgrounds surrounding historic houses, treetop adventure activities close to cafés and beautiful woodlands, and galleries offering fun events for little ones among interesting exhibits for those who are a bit older.

Don’t let rainy days put you off either. There’s plenty to do inside, with museums dotted throughout the market towns, where you might also fit in a bit of shopping or a bite to eat. So, whatever your age and whatever the weather, there’s something that’s bound to appeal to you!

Rainy days

Long rainy days can put anyone off going out of the house. But there’s no need to get soaking wet outdoors with all the fun indoor attractions the Chilterns has to offer.

A splendid Victorian building in the heart of Tring houses the incredible collections of the keen zoologist, Walter Rothschild, which are now part of the world-renowned Natural History Museum of London. The museum also runs a regular programme of inspiring exhibitions and events.

The medieval village of West Wycombe sits above a set of chalk caves renowned for hosting the notorious Hellfire Club, set up by Sir Francis Dashwood in the 18th Travel deep beneath the Chiltern Hills and see where Sir Francis and his guests ate, drank and possibly undertook more sinister rituals!

Wycombe Museum explores the history of High Wycombe and the surrounding area. It is known to many as the ‘chair museum’; yet, its hands-on galleries span more than just the history of local furniture-making, and include art, historical artefacts and social history too.

What something a little different to do? Whether you’re looking for quirky, immersive or thrilling experiences – the Chilterns has got it all.

Chilterns ANOB

Opened in 1929, this is the oldest surviving model village in the world. Step back in time to the 1930s and marvel at the thousands of buildings, plants and people created here in minute and meticulous detail, all linked by a model railway.

Explore a 19th-century farm complete with animals and working machinery, and a village with its green, cottages, forge and chapel. The museum stages a wide variety of events, bringing the history of the area to life.

Based in Wallingford, Riverside Parks and Pools provides a watery family day out during the summer season. There’s an outdoor heated swimming pool and a splash park for children, as well as a café, indoor changing area and even a campsite.

Home to the Stonor family for more than 850 years, the house at Stonor Park is full of global art and treasures. The grounds are also exquisite, with myriad walks and rides. But it’s the Park’s fantastical playground at Tumblestone Hollow that will capture the imaginations of the whole family.

One of the highest points in the Chilterns, Wendover Woods is a large nature area managed by Forestry England. There is a café, adventure playground, a Gruffalo trail and a fitness assault course. There’s also Go Ape’s fantastic Treetop Challenge where you can swing through the trees like Tarzan!
