Maiden Bower
Pre-dating Maiden Bower hillfort, there is evidence of a ‘causewayed enclosure’ which dates to the early Neolithic (c. 3000 BC). A geophysical survey in 1991 revealed flint tools and debris from the from the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
A glance at a map reveals several monuments and routes around the area, including the Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age barrows at Five Knolls, also a focus for early medieval burials.
Maiden Bower has long been linked to Roman activity based on finds of coins, pottery, quern fragments and an intaglio ring. Evidence of people dwelling on Dunstable Downs and the surrounding area suggests continuity from prehistoric and Roman times right through to recent history.
