Overview
The Grand Union Canal, winding its way from London to Birmingham, cuts through the north of the Chilterns running from Berkhamsted to Tring through the Vale of Aylesbury on to Birmingham. Canals are fantastic places to begin getting out into the Chilterns and nature.
Towpaths run alongside most sections of canal, allowing for some stunning walks. Towpaths are usually flat and can be surfaced with natural earth, stone, paving and Centrack. Many of the access points to the canal are ramped or have level access, making the canal accessible for most of the routes through the Chilterns.
A perfect walk to try out a canal walk is along the Wendover Canal. An offshoot of the Grand Union, the Wendover Canal was a natural spring that was converted into a feeder waterway. It is now a home of nature galore and has had major works to ensure it is accessible to all.
This canal is home to all manner of flora and fauna, with many native and migratory birds and water wildlife and wildflowers along beside the towpath.
