Bulstrode Camp
Bulstrode Camp is a ‘plateau hillfort’ as it is not on a hill, but on a slightly elevated spot.
It likely would have stood in a relatively open landscape, with marshy areas to the western side; indeed, the name Bulstrode, first recorded as ‘Burstrode’ possibly from Old English burg (fortified place) and strōd (marshy land with brushwood or trees).
The site may have very early origins, as there is a possible Neolithic long barrow within the enclosure, pre-dating our Iron Age fort builders by at least two millennia. The best dating evidence we have comes from three sherds of pot dating to the Early Iron Age (probably 600- 500BC).
