Desborough Castle

Desborough Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, also known as the Roundabout, is located on the southern part of the valley of the River Wye, which runs through the Chiltern Hills from the river Thames to the Vale of Aylesbury and the Ridgeway.

The fort occupies a perfect location for defence and control, and a fantastic position in a landscaped grass area above the valley, that has always been an important communication route since the Bronze Age.

The impressive medieval castle site is clearly visible today, but around its edges lie traces of an Iron Age hillfort, potentially dating back as far as 1000 BC. With a history of human activity lasting over 4000 years. Desborough Castle is a complex site which allows us to study human culture, daily life, and land use change from prehistoric times to the medieval ages. The entire enclosure is now covered by beech woodland.
