Chalk Streams Project Education Update

Well done to all the schools who took part in the 2022 Trout in the classroom project!

Trout in the classroom

Young brown trout were cared for in 10 local schools and released into Chilterns chalk streams just before Easter. Teachers tell us that the children ‘have been so inspired and enthusiastic about the project’ and that taking part has ‘truly sparked an enthusiasm for our local environment amongst the children.’ Just what we like to hear! As well as caring for the trout the children produced some fantastic work from poems to chalk stream inspired artwork. Some children even wrote and illustrated their own brown trout books.

New opportunities for schools

Thanks to funding from the Green Challenge Recovery Fund we have been able to expand our education offer to cover all Chilterns chalk streams. This term, for the first time, we’ll be leading school visits on the River Bulbourne (in conjunction with Boxmoor Trust) and River Ver (in partnership with the Ver Valley Society). We still have one or two spaces left –  please contact Laura at laura.silverstone@chilternsociety.org.uk for more information.

We have also recently launched a new programme on the River Wye with the Chiltern Rangers. Children will learn about the mills of the Wye and the important role the river played in the development of High Wycombe, then investigate the chalk stream habitat on their doorstep. For more information, please contact Ceri at cgroves@chilterns.org.uk
