Date and time: Sunday 23 August, 2026. 10am arrival. Finish 12.30-1pm.
We will meet at 10am at the College Lake Visitor Centre, where there is a good free carpark. Note: the centre opens at 10am, so we will probably start at around 10.15am after the initial briefing introduction. Please try to be prompt and plan your journey in advance. The end time always depends on the group size, pace, questions and points of discussion.
Theme: Exploring a special wildlife centre to learn about their approach.
Place: College Lake, Tring.
College Lake is an outstanding centre for wildlife that delights and informs wildlife watchers of all ages. Nature reclaimed this worked-out chalk quarry and created an outstanding centre for wildlife, which gives nature-lovers of all ages easy access to an amazing range of wild plants and birds.

Access and other information:
Some wheelchair access, including two mobility Trampers are available to use – if needed, please contact the centre on 01442 826774 or email collegelake@bbowt.org.uk to book – do contact us beforehand so that we know also, or cc us in. We have had positive experiences of using their trampers before.
There is a great little café, wildlife shop and toilets on site – see website for details. We will bring some light snacks and you can buy warm drinks and snacks after the walk.
Walking information:
Approximately 2-mile casual, circular walk around the lake, led by a brilliant volunteer who we have worked with before – Baz. Gentle slopes, some surfaced paths, gates, benches. Do prepare with suitable clothing for current high temperatures (hats, water, sunblock, sunglasses, hay-fever meds etc).
Dogs: As per the website, please note that dogs are not allowed, unless they are assistance dogs.
Suitable for: Families who can engage in a moderate circular 2-mile walk. A beautiful summer walk for families. We will be bringing our young grandchildren.
