Community shops

The Chilterns boasts at least 10 community shops, run by the community for the community.

All stock essentials and groceries – often sourced locally – and many carry luxuries including local beers, wines and spirits, gift items and magazines. Some have a café too where you will receive a warm welcome. They cover the length and breadth of the Chilterns. You will find a selection below. To find a community shop near you search our interactive map or see [our blog] for further information on community shops.

We have all the essential groceries, chilled and frozen food, drinks, ice-creams, take-away teas and coffees and much more. We carry a wide range of items from good suppliers and are continually looking to increase the range of good quality and reasonably priced items. We also offer a range of goods and services from local providers.

Ewelme Village Store

In November 2007 a village survey established that most residents were keen to support the re-opening of a village shop, pledging both financial and/or volunteering help.

With the generous help of Lord & Lady Jay, the Old Post Office was renovated and leased back to the village for use as a Community shop for a nominal rent per annum.

Hughenden Valley Community Shop

The Hughenden Valley Community Shop’s mission is to establish a village amenity that will create a sense of community and a local economy that will benefit the residents of Hughenden Valley. We will achieve this by creating a community hub which is owned and run by the community and will fulfill the needs of residents. Surplus funds will be donated back into community projects.

Sarratt Post Office Stores

Sarratt Post Office Stores is a community-owned and run business serving the people of Sarratt Parish and those that visit and pass through it. As well as an excellent ever-expanding range of food, scrumptious bread baked on the premises, hot pastries, drink and general grocery products, we offer a range of stationery and greetings cards, a dry cleaning service, prescription collection from the local surgery, phone and energy top-ups, the National and Health Lottery and a wealth of services (including foreign currency and car tax renewal) available from the Post Office counter. In fact, the motto of one of our managers, Grainger Biggs, is: ‘If we don’t stock it, you don’t need it!’

Shop @ The Lee

Based in the heart of the village at the Parish Hall, Shop at The Lee has now been trading successfully for over a decade. The shop goes from strength to strength, serving the community with everything from daily bread and newspaper orders to fine wines, household basics to plants and flowers for your home and garden, fresh meat, fruit and vegetables to greetings cards and much, much more.

We try to use local suppliers wherever possible: our meat comes from Kings Farm in Wendover, bread from Darvells in Chesham and treats from Just Biscuits in Stoke Mandeville to give just a few examples, whilst free range eggs are supplied by local farmers. The shop is owned by the community and mostly staffed by volunteers, which means that all profits can be reinvested to keep prices competitive.
