Bottom Wood
This ancient semi-natural woodland is owned by the Chiltern Society. Since receiving the wood in 1984 it has been managed as a nature reserve and demonstration wood.
It has bluebells and other woodland flowers and is a good place to see red kites.
The ancient wood is 11.5 ha and an area known as Toothill covers a further 3 ha, part of which is now managed as a chalk grassland glade.
This varied site contains many archaeological features – numerous sawpits, strip lynchets of a once farmed terraced hillside abandoned hundreds of years ago, and a hollow-way to an old well, now capped in concrete.
It is managed by the Chiltern Woodlands Project and volunteers from the Chiltern Society’s Bottom Wood Group. Further information is available from the Chiltern Woodlands Project or see www.chilternsociety.org.uk
