Longwick Sawmill
This site at Longwick used to be the location of one of the largest sawmills in the country, owned and run by the Walker family for 6 generations. The mill mainly used elm, making a variety of things, from chair bottoms through fishing trawls to coffin boards!
The mill closed down in 1971 as foreign timber became cheaper and elm became scarcer and scarcer, due to Dutch elm disease, but the mills at Longwick are still remembered and had an important impact on the local area.
